Backstory

On her life previous to CHB, she would never feel as she fit anywhere. She had no actual friends, despite being extremely outgoing and kindhearted.
She was always considered too eccentric, and possessed a huge creative that would oftenly bring her trouble. At school, it got her to detentions or sent her to the principal's office more times than she could count.
After one of her inherited abilities blossomed, she became an living decoy for monsters (and despite luz knew for sure that her eyes weren't deceiving her, her mother, Camila Noceda, never believe her stories, blaming on her child's fertile imagination). Before anything terrible happened, she was found by a satyr. Luz made up elaborated excuses and that's how she went for the first time to CHB when she was 14.

At first, Luz would spend most of the year with her mother, frequenting school (which she hated), and only be at CHB during summer holidays.
As she chose not to tell her mother about the gods or the existence of demigods (she wouldn't believe anyway), the girl omitted great part of the story, only letting Camila believe that it was an ordinary summer camp.
After turning 16, she lied to her mother about getting into college in NYC, so she finally got to move out and live full-time at CHB, only visiting her mother a few times in the year and sending letters to her.
Luz love her mother deeply, and her life choices (and lies) were made simply to protect her. Camila is absolutely the only attachment she has to her previous ordinary life.

After moving full-period to the camp, she got a job on The Owl House, a thrift shop owned by an old lady, Edalyn Clawthorn, commonly known as Eda.
The lady lived alone on the shop's second floor, along with her loyal pets – an owl named owlbert and a dog named king. Both the girl and the old lady grown fond of each other, and Eda would care for Luz as her own child. Luz naturally hid her secret about being a demigod, but turned out she wasn't the only one hiding secrets.
The demigoddess always questioned herself on why monsters never gave her a hard time on the shop – she never saw a single one tracking her to that place. And her questions were answered after a few weeks of work,
when the girl found Eda desperate when her daily medications ran out, and not one minute later of giving Luz a list of ingredients for her to brew more of the medication, the old woman turned into an owl-like beast.
With the help of her powers ( the owl beast was fascinated by light ) and also help of King, the girl could brew more of the potion and bring Eda back.
After that mess, Eda revealed herself to be a witch ( a very powerful and wise one ) worshiper of Hecate, but ine that also had been cursed when she was younger.
If she didn't take her daily medications, she would become that creature.
This was also the reason why the monsters did not come near the store: it was enchanted, protected by a magical security system, and the monsters also feared the cursed witch.
Luz also revealed her secret that day, and officially became Eda's apprentice to learn basic spells.
